Ufer is going out of his mind! With six seconds remaining in the game, the Wolverines lined up for what would be the final play, after starting their drive with 78 yards between them and the end zone. And let's not forget running back Lawrence Reid pitching the ball out of bounds at Indiana's 45 to stop the clock.
What happened next is history – immortalized by Michigan play-by-play announcer Bob Ufer.
QB John Wangler took the snap and threw downfield to Anthony Carter, who eluded two tacklers en route to the end zone with no time left on the clock.
Ufer continued hysterically, “I have never seen anything like this in all my 40 years of covering Michigan football … I hope you can hear me because I’ve never been so happy in all my cotton-picking 59 years.”
“Johnny Wangler to Anthony Carter will be heard until another 100 years of Michigan football is played … Michigan wins 27 to 21. They aren’t even going to try the extra point”
